Suzanne Hughes, Secretary of NCAEYC, has served on the board of directors since 2005. She has represented the West as a member-at-large (two terms), and served previously as Secretary, and most recently as President. Suzanne now serves on the Executive and Professional Development committees.

Suzanne is currently employed as the Education Supervisor at Macon Program for Progress Head Start in Franklin, NC. She also teaches Early Childhood courses at several local community colleges as an Adjunct Instructor.

One of her particular areas of interest in early childhood is professional development for providers. She feels we need to continue our efforts to emphasize professionalism the early childhood field. We are making great strides with the NC Early Educator Certification, and state-wide professional development opportunities, however, we must continue these efforts until early childhood educators are widely accepted as professionals instead of “baby sitters”.  By emphasizing that we are professionals we are laying the groundwork for higher wages, affordable health insurance, and benefits.

In her spare time she enjoys reading, knitting, shopping, attending sporting events and spending time with her amazing twins Braxton and Savannah.
