Job Summary
Lead the Professional Development and Support Services Department, providing oversight and leadership for local and regional training and professional development for early educators. Plan, direct and manage the operations of an IACET certified program authorized to issue continuing education credits at the highest level. Direct and implement a varied plan of educational workshops and courses for child care and licensing credits for early educators, meeting all standards required by the North Carolina Star Rated License and quality rating system (QRIS).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Treat information on Early Years’ clients, employees or board members in a confidential manner.
- Create, design and conduct workshops for early educators on topics aligned with Foundations (NCFELD). Provide instruction on early education topics in alignment with professional development requirements in the North Carolina Quality Rating System.
- Set quality assurance standards for department staff to ensure services are customer friendly, effective and efficient.
- Maintain IACET standards and accreditation. Lead all activities for successful re-accreditation on appropriate renewal timeline.
- Manage continuing education units (CEU) for local and regional Child Care Resource and Referral agencies including processing CEU instructor and course applications, maintain records and data entry of participants, design and develop new CEU courses, and provide technical assistance to new and existing instructors.
- Lead the planning and host a yearly statewide conference for early childhood teachers. Manage a broad cross-department planning committee to develop the program, solicit for workshop presenters and sponsors, coordinate marketing and registration for the event, and implement all functions necessary for a successful conference.
- Recruit, interview, hire, supervise and mentor staff as needed. Design and coordinate staff training to meet program standards. Assist staff with challenging programs or situations by modeling appropriate practices.
- Recruit and hire contractors to lead professional development workshops. Develop and maintain appropriate monitoring of instructional services provided by instructors.
- Oversee the development of courses and maintenance of an on-demand virtual workshop platform that meets best practice guidelines for adult learning.
- Develop budgets, review and monitor income and spending, manage purchase and reimbursement requests to ensure appropriate use of project funds. Review financial reports monthly to ensure that the spending is in accordance with the budget.
- Manage all projects within the department, adhering to the required contract stipulations. Make recommendations for amendments and revisions as needed.
- Create and utilize evaluation tools to measure program success and customer satisfaction as required by funders and in alignment with Early Years’ vision and mission.
- Identify funding resources and develop program proposals for existing and new activities.
- Prepare program reports as required by contracts and awards. Create and coordinate reporting of all local and regional output and outcome data.
- Set goals and measurable outcomes, evaluate and monitor progress toward goals. Adjust goals and create new strategies as needed to meet goals.
- Assist in organizing “special events” (such as Week of the Young Child) by serving on planning committees locally, regionally, statewide.
- Supervise and coordinate efforts to promote services in local and regional publications (newsletters, training calendar).
- Act as liaison with the Division of Child Development, regional CCR&R agencies, area community colleges, higher education institutions, and various child care advisory committees in order to collaborate for improved services to child care communities in Region 12 (Durham, Orange, Wake, Alamance, Caswell, Person, Franklin, Granville and Vance counties).
- In coordination with technical assistance team members, organize and facilitate meetings of child care teachers, directors and family child care providers in Durham, Orange and Wake counties.
- Represent Early Years at conferences locally, statewide and nationally as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Special Skills
- Effective oral and written communication skills with internal and external clients.
- Full range of experience using digital tools for communication, record keeping, outreach and marketing; knowledge of or demonstrated ability to learn database programs.
- Ability to supervisor and mentor staff
Education and Experience Requirements
- Master’s degree in early childhood or child development or related field required
- At least six years of leadership experience is required. Substantial experience as a child care program director, principal, or instructional leader must be demonstrated. A minimum of three years of leadership experience must include direct supervisory responsibilities with a track record of organizing and inspiring a team to work cohesively.
- Demonstrated experience developing and leading instructional workshops for adults.

Early Years has been awarded Living Wage Employer Certifications in Orange and Durham Counties, and is a Family Forward NC Certified Employer.
Employment is contingent upon passing a criminal background check. Early Years is no longer requiring the COVID-19 vaccine for employment due to the fact that there is significantly less risk of severe illness. However, Early Years strongly recommends that employees receive this vaccination in order to minimize the risk of infections in our workplace.
